Our Editorial Philosophy

This journal stands for the broad field of psychology. While our name includes our geographic location, our philosophy, authors, subscribers, and editorial board are deliberately international.

For years, the trend has been for journals to get narrower and more specialized with a few experts writing for each other. This journal is for the intelligent generalist who wishes to keep up across the breadth of psychology.

We will also be useful for the teacher of psychology as a source of new examples to update textbooks and freshen lecture material for students.

We believe that the producers of knowledge should be supported. We believe that many useful papers are rejected for minor and invalid reasons. When leading journals reject 90% of submissions, it is because of space limitations, cronyism, and bias by reviewers. Editors act to accept the easiest papers, not necessarily the best. Controversial and daring papers have the least chance of acceptance. Many rejected papers have problems with presentation, statistics, or format that are correctable. We want to work with authors to strengthen good papers, rather than search for excuses to reject them.

NAJP is a peer-reviewed journal. It is “covered” or indexed by Psychological Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Links to Psychology Journals, ERIC, Psychology Related Periodicals, Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory, Gales Periodical Directory, the Elsevier Database, and Cabell’s Directory of Psychology. NAJP is made widely available to scholars using the Internet. How? Through licensing agreements with Ebsco, InfoTrac, and ProQuest. This ensures a potentially large audience for any NAJP paper.
